(1923)

An honorable citizen's son— above all well-shaped
teen of the theatre, variously likeable,
at times I compose in the Hellenic tongue
rather audacious verses, which I circulate,
very covertly of course - Oh gods! lest they be seen
by the dark dressed ones that prattle about morality
verses of hedone the chosen one that goes
toward a barren and deprecated love.

An honest citizen's son— above all a goodlooking young man of the theatre, cherished in many ways, at times I compose in the Hellenic tongue rather audacious verses, which I circulate, clandestinely of course - Oh gods! lest they be seen by those who dress grey and prate about morality, verses of sensual pleasure of choice sensual pleasure that leads toward a barren and deprecated love.

Son of an honourable citizen -most important of all
good-looking young man of the theatre, amiable in many ways,
I sometimes write highly audacious verses in Greek
and these I circulate -surreptitiously, of course.
O gods, may the grey ones who prattle about morals
never see those verses: all about a special kind of sexual
pleasure, the kind that leads toward a condemned, a barren love.

By the end of the 4th century, passive homosexual acts under the Christian Empire were punishable by burning.[194] "Death by sword" was the punishment for a "man coupling like a woman" under the Theodosian Code.[195] It can be argued, however, that legislation under Christian rule was an extension of traditional Roman views on appropriate gender roles, and not an abrupt shift based on Christian theology. It is in the 6th century, under Justinian, that legal and moral discourse on homosexuality becomes distinctly Christian:[196] all same-sex acts, passive or active, no matter who the partners, were declared contrary to nature and punishable by death.[197] Homosexual behaviors were pointed to as causes for God's wrath following a series of disasters around 542 and 559.

400 CE in religion
The mausoleum of Galerius in Salonica (Greece) is converted into a church. Bishops from Gaza (Palestine) arrive at Constantinople to ask Arcadius that he close the pagan temple at Marneum.

versos do prazer excelente, encaminhado
para amor estéril e desaprovado.

Constantin Cavafy

Fils d'un citoyen honorable -- surtout beau,
éphèbe passionné de théâtre
plaisant divertissement
